My shakuhachi journey started with hearing Kohachiro Miyata play on a recording that captured my heart and soul, back in the early 90's. I then sought a beginner flute from Perry Yung that started me down the path of what would become my favourite instrument of all! Eventually I would own four flutes from Perry , of which I still have three. My primary instrument is a circa 1966 1.8 beauty I have named Hideo. Also own a 2.1 and Earth model 1.8 as well as a maple wood delight made by Geoffrey Ellis. Soon after securing my first shakuhachi, I started to take lessons from Larry Tyrrell in Portland, Oregon. One favourite memory is from the Seattle Matsuri in which I was able to attend workshops conducted by Kaoru Kakizakai and Ralph Samuelson, where I learned so very much! Currently I play and practice when I can, dividing my time between the shakuhachi, photography {Dragon Digital Photography}, genealogy, Celtic culture and languages, and ham radio {N7MYW}.Am currently a student of Kodō Araki VI Am also on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Bluesky as well.
