Itō Matsuhiro studied koto music under his father, Itō Shōchō I. He made his stage debut at the age of 3 with a koto performance at the Shinbashi Enbujo Kaikai, and was a member of the first class of NHK Traditional Japanese Music Technicians Training Association. He succeeded to the position of the second Iemoto of the Yamada-ryū upon the death of his father in 1977 and became Shōchō II. In addition to classical music, he continued to study ethnic music and contemporary music. Awards First Prize in the Sankyoku Performance Division of the Tokyo Shimbun Traditional Music Competition (1955), First Prize in the Composition Division of the Tokyo Shimbun Traditional Music Competition (1963)
